Valorant is a team-based multiplayer game set on the futuristic Earth where players control an agent from the offered lists. The agents are characters from several cultures and countries around the world. Every agent has a unique style of skills sets and playing style.

In the primary game mode, two teams of 5 players are assigned as attacking or defending teams. The players start the first round with a pistol and a few signature abilities. Other weapons, shields, and abilities can be purchased through in-game economic systems and currencies based on the previous round.

The ultimate objective of this game is to win the most rounds by eliminating opponents or specific spike objectives. The team that can win 13 rounds first wins the match.

Game modes

The game offers multiple game modes and event-based modes.

  1. Unrated
  2. Competitive
  3. Spike Rush
  4. Swiftplay
  5. Deathmatch
  6. Escalation
  7. Replication

Unrated: This standard non-ranked mode is played as best of 25 rounds where the team able to win 13 games wins the match.

The attacking team has to plant and activate a bomb device named Spike on the specific bomb sites. They have to defend the Spike for a specific time. On the other hand, the defender team has to deactivate the Spike or resist the attacking team from planting one.

Competitive: This mode is the same as an Unraked mode with the addition of a win-based ranked system. Unlike the Unrated mode, if both teams tie the score at 12-12, they need to “win by two” or vote to draw. Winning by two means two more extra rounds will be played, and the team to win both rounds will be victorious. If both teams win one round, players will again get to “Vote to Draw.”

If most players vote against a draw, two bonus rounds will again be played to decide the match’s fate.

Spike rush: This mode is played as best of 7 rounds. Players begin the round with all abilities except Ultimate. Guns are randomized, and in every round,  every player starts with the same weapon.

Swift play: This mode is shortened version of Unrated mode where the game is played as best of 9 rounds.

Deathmatch: Deathmatch mode is a team duel where players go to improve their aim and warm their hands before playing Competitive mode. This mode does not provide any agent skills. The game ends when a player reaches 40 kills or time elapsed.

Escalation: This mode is a team duel where the teams receive random weapons. A team must reach several kills to move to the next weapon. In this game,  players enter the game with random agents. The first team reaches level 12, or the most advanced team within 10 minutes wins the match.

Replication: In this mode, players vote for an agent they want to play. After voting, the game randomly selects any agent from the votes. In this best-of-9 game, teams receive the same amount of credits regardless of winning or losing previous rounds.

The agent’s abilities are pre-bought, but weapons and shields reset every round. This mode is suitable for practicing teamwork and communication skills.

Agents

The game offers several types of agents. The agents are divided into four roles according to their play style.

  1. Duelists
  2. Sentinels
  3. Initiators
  4. Controllers

Duelist: According to Riot, Duelists are ‘Self-sufficient fraggers.’ Duelists focus on getting quick frags for their team with offensive abilities.

  1. Jett
  2. Phoenix
  3. Yoru
  4. Neon
  5. Reyna
  6. Raze

Initiator: Initiators typically initiate the fight to give the team an early-game advantage. Initiators set the stage for their teammates’ success by breaking open sites or zoning opponents.

  1. Breach
  2. Skye
  3. Sova
  4. KAY/O
  5. Fade

Sentinel: Sentinels try holding zones and reinforcing territories. Sentinel has an important position in the game by locking down areas.

  1. Cypher
  2. Chamber
  3. Killjoy
  4. Sage

Controller:  Controllers mainly control the game and strategize fights. They also help the team execute the strategies by using throwables to block enemies’ vision and blocking areas.
